Experience bihac

Bihać is a city and the administrative centre of Una-Sana Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is situated on the banks of river Una in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Bosanska Krajina region.

According to documents and historical sources, the first medieval urban settlements and towns around the Una river, began to appear in the middle of the 13th century. Bihać, as the centre of Pounje, was first mentioned on 26 February 1260, in the charter of Hungarian King Bela IV, and was described as a town built on the river's Island of St. Ladislav, owned by the Benedictine abbey of Topusko. Just two years later, in 1262, Bela proclaimed Bihać a royal free city and placed it under the direct authority of the Hungarian throne.

Fethija Mosque

Fethija Mosque is a mosque and former Catholic church located in the town of Bihać, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built in 1266, it is the oldest gothic building in the country. It was originally built as a Catholic church dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, and was subsequently transformed into a mosque following the 1592 conquest of Bihać from Habsburg Croatia by the Ottoman Empire.

Captain's Tower

One of the oldest structures in the city, this is not just a tower with years of service behind it. The recently-reopened museum tells the story in detail, but allow us to give you a taste. According to legend, it was here that King Bela IV took refuge from a marauding band of Tatar horsemen who weren't trying to catch him for a simple chit-chat. The Hungarian leader hid in this tower, and he showed his gratitude to Bihać by declaring it a free city on February 26, 1260. The tower has actually been more like hell than heaven over the centuries, acting as a prison for the local authorities and myriad occupying forces.
